Piper cub plans

There must be more scale RC airplanes of the Piper Cub than any other and it's great flying characteristics and easy to replicate scale details are the two main reasons why this is so.

This giant scale plane has a wing span of " and the finished weight will be between She can be powered by a 1. If a completely ready to fly smaller model is what you are looking for. Access to the interior of the Hangar 9 Piper Cub is provided by the scale split door and the pilot you can see is included in the kit.

This is a very good move by Hangar 9- you can spend a lot of time looking for the right pilot and this one is pose able. The radio gear is below the seats and cockpit floor and you also bolt on the wing panels with nylon bolts that are accessible from inside.

The scale cockpit panel is an example of the attention to detail that is shown on the Hangar 9 Piper Cub. There is even the Cub emblem on the tachometer! Unfortunately, the end of the tank is visible. It could be painted cub yellow or covered over with a panel. The video below is well worth a look and shows some very good piloting skills and even shows a crash! No damage. The complete tail assembly is bolted on.

This makes it very convenient for replacement purposes, but please check frequently that the bolts have not come loose and apply thread locker during the assembly process. This set-up requires either a JR Matchbox or transmitter mixing or you could use one reverse servo and a y-harness.

The landing gear on this Hangar 9 Piper Cub is an accurate reproduction of the full scale, with nice looking Piper Cub wheels and shock absorbing struts. The wing struts also attach at this point. All of the hardware is of first class quality and of American standard sizes-no metric stuff here! This photo shows how the struts attach to the fuselage with quick release cotter pins. This system is certainly quick to hook-up and disassemble, however it is easy to loose those little cotter pins in the grass!

On my quarter scale Cub, I prefer to tap the strut ends with a thread and drill out the strut brackets with a clearance drill. I then use socket head cap screws that stay in the brackets and do not fall into the long grass! The use of a long ball type driver makes this task simple.

Here we see the strut assemblies folded almost flat on the undersurface of the wing panel. Photo is from the Hangar 9 Web Site. This feature makes transportation and storage a little simpler and I wish my J3 Cub had this idea!

My Cub is many years old and was built by a competitor but it is still flying and has given me excellent service, As mentioned earlier-"Nothing flies like a Cub". The range of power options is impressive. The aircraft has a simple, lightweight design which gives it good low-speed handling properties and short-field performance.

Its simplicity, affordability and popularity invokes comparisons to the Ford Model T automobile. The aircraft is a high-wingstrut-braced monoplane with a large-area rectangular wing. It is most often powered by an air-cooled, flat-4 piston engine driving a fixed-pitch propeller.

Its fuselage is a welded steel frame covered in fabricseating two people in tandem. The Cub was originally intended as a trainer and had great popularity in this role and as a general aviation aircraft.

Due to its performance, it was well suited for a variety of military uses such as reconnaissance, liaison and ground control. Many Cubs are still flying today. Notably, Cubs are highly prized as bush aircraft. The aircraft's standard chrome yellow paint has come to be known as "Cub Yellow" or "Lock Haven Yellow". Sponsored by William T. Pipera Bradford industrialist and investor, the affordable E-2 was meant to encourage greater interest in aviation.

Later inthe company went bankrupt, with Piper buying the assets, but keeping founder C. Gilbert Taylor on as president. Inan earlier Cub was altered by employee Walter Jamouneau to become the J-2 while Taylor was on sick leave.

The coincidence led some to believe that the "J" stood for Jamouneau, while aviation historian Peter Bowers concluded that the letter simply followed the E, F, G and H models, with the I omitted because it could be mistaken for the numeral one. Piper, however, had encouraged Jamouneau's changes and hired him back. Although sales were initially slow, about 1, J-2s were produced before a fire in the Piper factory, a former silk mill in Bradford, Pennsylvaniaended its production in The changes mostly amounted to integrating the vertical fin of the tail into the rear fuselage structure and covering it simultaneously with each of the fuselage's sides, changing the rearmost side window's shape to a smoothly curved half-oval outline and placing a true steerable tailwheel at the rear end of the J-2's leaf spring-style tailskid, linked for its steering function to the lower end of the rudder with springs and lightweight chains to either end of a double-ended rudder control horn.

A number of different air-cooled engines, most of flat-four configuration, were used to power J-3 Cubs, resulting in differing model designations for each type: the J3C models used the Continental A series[7] the J3F used the Franklin 4AC[8] and the J3L used the Lycoming O The Piper J-3 Cub became the primary trainer aircraft of the CPTP and played an integral role in its success, achieving legendary status.

The need for new pilots created an insatiable appetite for the Cub. Inthe year before the United States' entry into the war, 3, Cubs had been built; wartime demands soon increased that production rate to one Cub being built every 20 minutes. Piper distributors nationwide were encouraged to do the same.

On April 29,all 48 Flitfire aircraft, one for each of the 48 states that made up the country at that time, flew into La Guardia Field for a dedication and fundraising event which included Royal Navy officers from the battleship HMS Malayain New York for repairs, as honored guests.
